Together Flyers Soar!
Our Franklin Community is stronger than ever. We know that times are very difficult for everyone, and the beginning of a new school year always comes with both excitement and challenges. This year is no different. What is different, however, is that the challenges seem to be more amplified than ever as we navigate this new online world.
It’s important to remember that this situation isn’t easy for any member of our community. We are all under a lot more stress, and we are all working harder than ever. As such, we must allow each other grace, leave some room to make mistakes, and never forget that we have a shared goal: ensuring for the social, emotional, and academic achievement of our children.
During my time in our virtual classrooms, I have observed:
- Our teachers support all learners through modeling, scaffolding, supportive questioning, pairing written with verbal directions. Teachers are supporting students’ independence through the gradual release of responsibility – modeling, trying on together, interacting with peers to negotiate meaning, trying on independently
- Many parents support their children at home by making sure their child is in an environment that is conducive to learning, ensuring their child understands the task at hand, and encouraging them to be engaged and work hard.
- Students are engaged in rigorous learning activities while trying on new virtual tools like taking polls, participating in breakout room discussions, finding their voice in the classroom: and sharing their thinking with others.

Annual Giving Campaign
The goal of the Friends of Franklin Foundation is to raise the additional dollars required for high-quality STEAM education with the generous financial support of parents, businesses, and community members. COVID-19 has put tremendous strain on school resources as well as on our entire community. With your support, we can fund these opportunities to help our students succeed, including:
- A $5,000 donation for additional learning-at-home school supplies
- A STEAM Resource Coordinator to support project-based learning
- PE equipment for at-home learning
- A new STEAM-based arts program for all students
- Teacher training and professional development to support online learning
Join us as a Friend of Franklin by making a tax-deductible donation to our Annual Giving Campaign. Our goal is to raise $65 per student—a total of $25,000—to support Franklin Elementary students and teachers this school year. There are many ways you give to Franklin—from volunteering, to donating classroom supplies, to making monetary donations—and that is what makes our school so special. Remember, no contribution is too small. Each and every dollar counts!
Together, we can support an exceptional learning environment for our children. Please give what you can by making a donation that is meaningful.

Meet Coach Joe, Our New PE Teacher!

What do you do for fun and exercise?
I enjoy doing different types of physical activities outdoors. Surfing is my favorite, but hiking, bike riding, and skateboarding are fun! Push-ups are one of my favorite exercises.
How can families be healthy at home?
One way is to exercise for at least 60 minutes a day, and exercising with someone is fun! Another way to be healthy at home is to drink plenty of water and eat healthy meals and snacks. Try to prepare meals that include fruits and vegetables. Finally, try and eat meals together with someone and talk.
What is a fun fact about yourself?
I like to put ketchup on my pizza!

What are your goals for this year at Franklin?
One of my goals is for students, families, and staff to practice good healthy habits in exercise, nutrition, and social wellness. Also, I want to learn about the students and the community!
Would you rather fly like a kite or swim like a dolphin and why?
I would rather swim like a dolphin because they like to surf too!
Anything else to share?
Thank you for welcoming me into your community and allowing me to teach students Physical Education.
We’re happy to have you as a member of the Franklin Flyer Family, Coach Joe!

2020 School Year Kicks Off with Online Learning Success Kits for Every Franklin Student
This year, we gave every student a canvas Online Learning Success Bag to help keep their school supplies and computers organized at home. We asked Ms.Cassin, one of our third-grade teachers, what went into her class bags.
What did you put in the success bag for your students?
For third grade, we put in whiteboards and markers, notebooks, math books, and a pencil box filled with materials. We also gave everyone a friendship bracelet to inspire a virtual community. Words of encouragement (paired with candy) were also included, as well as “Meet the Teacher” and welcome letters.
How are these bags helpful to you AND to the students and families?
The whiteboards give each student an opportunity to share their thinking in the moment during class. We want learning to be equitable. Even though all work is done online, it is still important to practice our writing in journals. I enjoy seeing my student’s handwritten work.
What is one tip you can offer students and families to be successful in distance learning?
“Flexibility is the name of the game!” We can practice patience and kindness towards all members of our classroom and school community. Going into each lesson with a positive mindset and ready to participate will set you up for success. There will be circumstances that are out of our control but remember, we are all in this together.
